The 17th Annual Sidewalk Film Festival August 28-30
Sidewalk Film Festival is produced by the Alabama Moving Image Association, a federally recognized 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, encourage and support filmgoers, the city of Birmingham and the filmmaking community. In addition to hosting the annual film festival, we host monthly networking and educational events, a monthly documentary series, short film and screenwriting competitions, manage a youth board and a variety of other year-round programs.

In 1979, TV cameraman Trent Harris unexpectedly encountered Beaver, Utah native Dick Griffiths while out testing the station’s first video camera. Hungry for the spotlight, on the spot Griffiths’ improvised an eccentric character he coined “Groovin Gary”. Harris would later recreate this unusual experience in two short films, starring then unknown-actors Sean Penn and Crispin Glover. Together, these three shorts would be shown at Sundance as “The Beaver Trilogy.” But what happened to Dick Griffiths? Brad Besser's film follows the unusual and harrowing quest to find the long-lost “Groovin Gary.”
